At least, I've got rats, and I use the "Sterilite" brand containers- they're quite large (19 x 28 x 20?- they're almost exactly the size of a #300 Varikennel) and with a screen on top, they work very well. Rats don't generally swallow what they chew (safety) and my guys haven't shown any interest in chewing on the cage (perhaps because they have a number of other, more appitizing treats- carrotbones, a piece of applewood, and the ever enticing Cardboard Paper Towel Roll....
