Confused about the gender of my Chipmunks

Hi
I am confused after finding babies in our Chipmunk nesting box.
I intended to breed my Chipmunks, but thought the sex of my Chipmunks was the opposite to what I think they now are.
After a unforutnate (terminal) accident with what I thought was the male, we purchased another Chipmunk hoping it was another male. We already had what I thought was a female.
I thought the one was the female was getting rather round around the base, and I thought, hey She is pregnent.
But now I think the new Chipmunk is the female, as it appears to have 6 nipples (is this correct ?), and sleeps with the babies at night.
What I thought was the Female now sleeps in a tube outside of the nest box. Was the roundness just a case of eating too much and getting fat ?
The one that sleeps with the babies is very friendly, but chases the other one alot. The other one is very timid.
Can you give me any clues as to what I have ?
I suppose the final answer will be if the babies survive.
Thanks for any help to reduce my confusion
