i have a small finch box with a lil 1 1/2 in diameter hole for them to climb into. the box has a flip up lid, and i just peek in and move the bedding a bit to peek in, it doesnt seem to bother them. maybe im just lucky, but i can even gently lift out a few babies, with no ill effects! good luck with yours, and remember to replace the bedding when your done!
