Rat Breeding Enclosures

I looking to breed between 3 and 5 female rats. Should they be kept separate with a rotating male to sire all the litters? Or can more than one female be placed together? If so can the male remain in with them?
What size enclosures would hold these rats in these situations? Any help appreciated - Thanks
