First of all congratulations on taking over this poor animal. That is very nice of you. You really have a lot to learn. I can give you many sites to visit for information, but I don't know how to post them. let me give you the basics on gp's.
1. Do not put in a tank, they are suseptible to upper respitory infections and adequate ventilation is needed.
2. Do bed them on pine or cedar shavings, can cause URI problems. Aspen or kiln-dried pine is recommended.
3. GP's cannot manufacture their own vitamin C which can be fed to them through high amounts of Vitamin C veggies.
4. Gp's require Hay (not alfalfa--only for babies and as a treat), pellets, water 24/7. They also require at least 1 cup of fresh veggies a day.
5. They don't have to be bathed often, but you are doing okay with the nails, if you can't see the quick, do it little by little.
6. Piggies require exercise too, so try to take him out and let him run a bit, they have little playpens for gp's.
7. To get you started on feeding, here is a sample of what my pigs eat:
red/green leaf lettuce, chickory, romaine, dandelion, carrot, grass (no iceberg lettuce), spinach,
red/green/orange peppers, cilantro, orange, parsely (these are all high Vit-C content),
seedless grapes, apple, melon.
Okay, those are the minimal basics, now for the sites you really need to visit.
Cavycages.com (a great site where you can build a large inexpensive cage)
Angeyswebdesigns.com (a food listing w/pictures)
Guinealynx.com (for general information)
Cavyspirit.com (for general information)
Cavymadness.com, Caviesgalore.com, Guinealynx.com (forums which are very helpful).
PS - On Caviesgalore forum the first topic is "Shopping List", there you can also get a detailed extensive list of what your pig can, should or should not eat.
Good luck with the gp, they are really nice little pets. Please check out some of these other sites and if you have any other questions, please e-mail me at Ittybittysmom1226@yahoo.com.
Good luck
PS - Not sure about the foot thing, but your best bet is to really have the pig checked over at a cavy knowledgable vet.
PSS - This board is really slow, there are many more active ones where you can get more help.
