Is Calendula cream. Gel is okay as well, but when it dries, it forms a sort of itchy patch that may not be good since he is scratching at it all the time. Is he using his hind foot to reopen the wound? If so, you can get nail caps made for cats in various sizes that are designed to be glued on temporarily. If you got some very small, kitten sized ones, I am thinking that this may give you a while where he can't keep ripping it open.
Calendula is a great healing cream. I often do not use it as a first line treatment in deep wounds for the simple fact that it can cause the wound to heal over so quickly that infection can be trapped inside. If it is not deep enough to worry about forming another abscess, calendula may now be the way to go.
You can buy it at natural food centers & stores. My favourite brand is Nelson's. It has the highest concentration of Calendula and a neutral base that is non-irritating, unlike some of the cheaper ones. Avoid hand lotion preparations that call themselves calendula cream -- these have other chemicals in them that can aggrevate an open wound.
