I've seen methods for cutting out the center of the plastic lid, attaching some screen mesh over the opening for ventilation and to keep the hamster from escaping.

We had Syrians for years, and Houdini had nothing on them for escaping ability. I'd hate for the hamster to go missing and/or you to get in trouble having the hamster discovered while it is going walkabout.
