The first survey I saw done on them came up with a life expectancy of 24 months. The sample in that study used hedgies that came from a hedgehog rescue, a couple of vets, and an animal crematorium. A more recent study using data from those sources, the Hedgehog Registry, and hedgehog mailing list participants came up with an average of 36 months. I don't know what the standard deviation was, just the average.
I've raised them for 7 years and the general expectancy I've developed (which is consistent with the experience of everyone else I've talked to who has raised them for 5+ years) is that you usually expect them to get to 3, a fair number make it to 4, a few make it to 5, and if they make it to 6+ it's very fortunate! There are occasional hedgehogs who live 6 to 9 years, but unfortunately, 3 to 5 is a more realistic expectation.
