Yes, they are definitely illegal. Ignorance is no excuse, and the pet store should be ashamed for not doing their homework! CA doesn't seem to actively seek them out like some illegal states, but word is that if it's found by fish & wildlife, the hedgie gets sent out of state and the owner gets a $500 per animal fine.
