I have a hedgie who is almost 4 years old. He does not have a rock in his cage. I have been clipping his nails myself since I have had him... It isn't too hard.. sometimes you can distract them w/ mealie worms :-). As for play time, you're right, evening is best. However, my hedgie goes back and forth to my kindergarten classroom and doesnt complain when we take him out once a day for "tiggy time" it is all in what they are used to
