Short Tails - As much information as I can offer for now.

I plan to put more of this information on my web page when I can. I started off with one STO which was nearly a year old, a female. I just recently went to the Reptile Show here near my home and they had some there. I was going to get a male, but was afraid for one they would fight. For two, even though the babies are cute, I wouldn't want to not be able to find good homes for them. I got another female instead, because I have read in places females can be housed together.

I'm not sure if they just don't get along, if it's a territorial dispute, or dominance display, but they've gotten into scraps when I had them together. Funny thing is that when I first put them in the cage together, they were fine for about ten minutes... then they got angry with each other. I'm switching them between cages right now to try and get them used to each other's scent. I figure now that there's a lot of misleading to get you to buy them... that only younger females of the same litter can be housed together, but I could be wrong. If anyone knows then the information is very welcome.

As far as food goes, they eat just about everything I offer them, but especially love crickets and mealworms. I read that where they are native in Brazil and Chile, they are welcomed by the natives because they keep down the bug and rodent populations. Normally I've seen people using aquariums, 10 gallons and up to house their possums. I don't have as much space right now, and figured perhaps I'd try something different. My original is now in a hamster/gerbile housing unit with metal and plastic sides... I'll soon hope to have pictures of it on my web site.... but it offers her more climbing room, and with the ability to add on tubes to it, I can lead it all over. I'd advise caution in this though... if you make it too long and lean it against something, if it's jarred it can easily slip out of place, and then your possum might slip away!

Another thing on food, is that I've tried different types of fruits and veggies. They like chicken, but I haven't tried tuna yet. Carrots seem to please my older female, and I've been told they like eggs... haven't gotten to try this one either. A good quality catfood is good for the base of the diet, something to leave in the dish for them to eat reguarly. I also blend this with some ferret treats, which has a mix of ferret food, dried fruits, and a few other items, depending on the brand and such. They like sweet things. I made hummingbird nectar once and then tried offering it to my older female, and she loved it! I only offer this as a treat, and not too frequently at all.

The bedding that I chose to use is aspen, as it is a well recommended bedding. It isn't very messy or dusty, it is absorbant, and it cleans up well (from my experiences anyway). I also decided that for 'nests' for them, I would buy the kind you put in with finches... and the possums couldn't be happier, though now that I got this new cage it seems my older female likes to spend more of her time curled up in some of the tubes I extended to the side of my desk, and I can peek in on here while she sleeps.

If anyone has any more questions or comments, feel free to IM me at VOYGER44 through AOL or AIM... and if not, just feel free to e-mail me at VOYGER44@aol.com, because as per my last post... I missed a lot without coming here on the site to check. Anyone know of any Short Tail Forums? I remember seeing one a while back, but then I lost my saved URLs. Anyway, hope I could be of some help to some people. As I said, feel free to contact me and state it's about the possums, otherwise I might delete it thinking it's junk mail. The reason I ask this is because I might not be back on here to check it for a while. For everyone else, good luck.
