Mice questions

Hi there, I recently acquired 2 females that live in a 10gallon.
I know females shouldn't smell that bad if you keep the tank clean but the smell leaves an acidy feel in my nose whenever I'm near. I'm not allergic to mice (I am allergic to cats and dust mites) and I wash my hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap whenever I handle anything inside the tank. The thing is, I've noticed that my eyes sting slightly whenever I'm near the tank as well.

My question is has anyone else experienced this?
Is it from their urine or their feces that causes the slight stinging?
Does anyone know what I can do about it?

I'm going to buy some fake vanilla extract (not made with alcohol) and add a drop or 2 to their water to reduce the smell.
Does anyone who uses vanilla extract with their mice know whether it will prevent the acidy smell?

Thank you for all your help.
I appreciate any info.

Ian
