:For a first litter I would not recommend leaving the father in there. I do highly recommend the female has a friend, though, as it will help her tremendously.
:I myself have bred numerous litters and depending on the mother and the litter, I generally leave the father in there. The facts are that as soon as the mother mouse gives birth (within a few hours usually) she will go into post partum estrus and generally if the father is in there they will mate again. However, especially if the mouse has been bred before, or if she has been a helper mouse to a friend that has given birth before, she will not give birth to the second litter. It will be reabsorbed. In fact, I have found that if a mouse has been bred before (especially within the past 2 months), and if she is not being given a lot of special treatment for the pregnancy, it can be difficult to make her keep the litter at all if she is removed from the male and put back with her female friends. This is why an inordinately small amount of females who are purchased from mixed sex cages end up being pregnant (as small as around 25% it seems) when in reality they all should give birth within 3 weeks. It is that once they are removed from the "stressful" situation they purge themselves of that litter by reabsorbing it.
:However, if you got the female from a reputable breeder when she was pretty young and you've had her for a while and you recently decided to breed her it is fairly probable that she would end up having 2 litters back to back, especially as it is her first litter.
:I just thought I'd give you a little more background information as to why I am recommending you do not leave the male in there. You should be considering having a female friend in with her though.

::Ok, before i ask my question, let me just make something clear:
::(cuz i know that a lot of you will lecture people about being responsible breeders when they ask something, without answering the question) I did TONS and TONS of research before i decided to breed my mice, the mice i chose to breed are very healthy, in great condition, I know not to breed them too young, i have some potential adopters for the babies, and even if know one takes some of them, i will still be able to take care of all of them, no matter how many, bla bla bla. OK i just wanted to straighten that out. :) Now, on to the question:
::some people will leave the father mouse in with the female while she is pregnant and keep him with her till after the the pups are born, on the theory that he will be a great "dad". But, i know that he will mate with her soon after she gives birth. I don't want to put too much strain on her (ecspecially since it's her first litter). What i want to know is, what do you guys do?
::have any of you left dad with the mom?
