I'm really quite new and inexperienced as an owner of a primate, and my philosophies on animal ownership in general sometimes cause "purist" to turn red and have a stroke. However, if I am going to attempt to share my life and my environment with another of God's creatures, then I want to make the experience beneficial to both of us. Otherwise, I will not intervene in the genetic fate of the species. For example, tigers, sharks, and elephants will live or die without my direct intervention. On the other hand, if I can incorporate a reasonably small reproducing culture of one or two exotic species into my life, then I will do all I can to meet the basic needs of those animals, and I will do all I can to train the animal to meet some of my basic needs. For example, if I can potty train the animal, I will do so. If I can not potty train the animal, then I will find a way to train it to wear some kind of diaper, because having a flood of animal waist going down the back of my shirt collar is unpleasant to me.

Monkeys, parrots, and many reptiles are no longer being imported into the United States. The wild relatives of those who are already in the United States still live and try to reproduce in their native (third world) countries. There is very little I can do for or against even a single one of those animals. On the other hand, a few reproducing colonies of those animals are now living in the United States. And I can affect the lives of a few of those animals, and by doing so, they affect my life. The goal is to make it a Win-Win deal.
