First - where do you live? If you live in New York City, you can have nothing more exotic than a dog or cat. Are primates permitted or restricted in your state, county, city, OR the zoning area where your house sits?

Second - What are your resources, including a good bit of cash and LOTS of patience? How squeamish are you? Primates can and WILL bite, they can not be potty trained, and they are a LOT of work.

Finally, the top two species for tamability that I have read about or have had experience with are (1) a Costa Rican Squirrel monkey (NOT a squirrel monkey from South America) which is highly endangered in Costa Rica because they are so unafraid of people that they come right up to people and (2) Tamarins - legend has it that Red Handed Tamarins are supposed to be very easy to tame, although I, personally, have never seen one. The only problem with tamarins is getting diapers and harnesses and leashes designed specifically for them. We got our diapers and harness from www.metromonkey.com

Have you considered contacting Helping Hands? They have a program for people to do foster care for their capuchins-in-training. At least you would be able to get a good deal of experience before you had to shell out a lot of cash.
