No doubt that that is true for a squirrel monkey, or any monkey larger than a squirrel monkey, but we have tamarins.
Even IF there was a waist-harness available for them (and I could find NOTHING that would fit our monkeys when we first bought them) Tamarins have ZERO patience. Putting a harness and leash on them that takes ANY time at all is no fun for the monkey and certainly no fun for the owner. Ours wear a harness made of sterling silver, and they wear the harness all of the time. Silver has antibiotic properties. The harness has a "Roman" configuration, so that any pressure is transferred to their chest and abdomen, NOT their neck. Two beads control neck and body tautness, and the harness has tiny fiber connectors which break apart and allow the harness to expand around the monkey as it grows. After 24 hours, the tamarin is as unaware of the harness as a human is of a watch-band or of a ring. The leash (which is made of a super-tough, somewhat-stiff nylon material so that it can not wrap around their necks and choke them) snaps off or on in an instant. They NEVER wear the leash in their cages or when they are not under direct supervision. Thanks to the diapers and the harness and the leash we use, we can and do take our pets with us almost everywhere we go. No hassles, no problems. They are happy and safe, and so are we.
