Personally, I am strongly against that for any animal, reguardless of what our current society is shoving in our face. Even for dogs and cats the operation has negative side effects. I talked to a guy in North Carolina who had a troop of java macaques. The young males were attacking the older animals, trying to increase their rank in the troop. The man gave them fluoxatine (also called prozac) which had a dramatic effect on the testosterone-induced aggression. At least with prozac, the effects are reversible. Just stop using it if it becomes a problem. But once an animal is mamed for life, it is mamed for life. Correct dosages of fluoxatine calculated by the animals weight can be derived from information given on www.metromonkey.com (the page called "Treasure!").
