Just the very tip of the nail Mark, the easiest way for a lot of people is while the Prairie dog is hanging on the side of the cage ( as they tend to do ) you just snip the very tip off.

You can also place a brick or patio stone in the cage with them, they'll play and dig at the stone or brick and that will help keep their nails filed down so clipping won't be necessary.

With a pup, if you start young doing it young enough, they should just hold still when older to have it done.
