Hello, I'm new here :) I've been interested in a ferret, but a lovely person on the ferret forum suggested bunnies instead. I researched quite a bit, and found they do fit me alot better (yeah). I'm now pretty pleased I didn't go out and adopt a ferret before considering other animals.
My only questions...housing needs.
1. The 2 dears I want at the humane society are a minirex female (2 years old), and a minilop male (1.5 years old). Will these two be compatable? There are other female rexs at the society, but I heard male/female pairs do better (I beleive the society alters them), and I'm smitten with the minilop ;)
2. I will likely be making my own cage (was making it for the rats, but a virus hit and cut down my numbers drastically, making the unfinished cage useless). It would be horizontal. The cage dimensions would be 4 ft long x 2 ft wide x 16 inches high. I'm just assuming that's big enough for the minis ;) As for the bottom, where can I find a pan to those dimensions? And the top, I was going to get two large sheets of masonite and inlay wire in the top, and make it possible to make them latch on the cage, so I only have to kpen one at a time, and they'll be strong enough to hold, just in case the cats wondering what's underneath. I'd love suggestions on the cage. Would it be fine?
3. These will be house rabbits, and will be allowed to free roam the house. For the first few weeks, should I let them adjust to just the room their hutch will be in? I'll leave that rooms door open at night (bunnies would be in the hutch), cause that's the cat's room (she likes to sleep with me). After a long time, tho, do you think it would be okay to let them go to and from the cage tout les temps? Even when I'm sleeping and not there?
