Neutered *and spayed* bunnies are less territorial, less agressive, don't spray *as much, if at all*, tend to be more affectionate, calmer, and will hold to litter box training better. It also eliminates the possibilities of several types of cancers, such as testicular cancer and uterine cancer *in females*. So yes, it can help you bun live quite a bit longer than he would if you left him unaltered, if only for the fact you won't want to kill him for spraying all over the house. *grin*
If you have a vet that has done numerous neuters/spays on rabbits, who knows well their needs and how to care for them, then it is no more risky than any other operation is. Anytime an animal is anesthetised and operated on there is an inherant risk. So no one can guarantee you 100% that your bun will be all right, but the risk is minimal under the right care.
Hazel is going in to be spayed on the 19th of next month, so I feel your same anxieties. Statistics are all well and good, but when its your baby it becomes so much more personal.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
