Your best bet for a well-socialized rat is to contact a good breeder, but, saving a rat from the shelter is just as good - you'll just have to deal with their past and socialize them a lot ;) Pretty much the same standards as looking for a healthy rabbit.. bright eyes, alert, not scared of people, healthy size, etc. Wire-bottom cages are a no-no since the rats, after being on the wire for a while, will get "bumblefoot" or inflamed feet. If you're still interested in adopting a rattie, reply back and I'll tell you some more with my experiences with rats (have two) and will give you some great info sites.
