*grin* Good to see you're a rat lover too!
I actually have a particular rat in mind, from the Best Rabbit, Rodent, and Ferret House in Seattle. I've already talked a few times with the woman who works with him. He's extremely friendly and people socialized, but he HATES other male rats. She's tried several times to pair him with another male, both younger, older, and his age, and nothing has worked. Her suggestion was that he get fixed. I have no problem fixing him, of course. I'm going in to see her on Monday to talk more about him and possibly adopt. As soon as he's fixed we're going to try again with getting him a companion.

I would appreciate any sites you can offer. I've been researching them extensively for a few weeks now, but the more info the better :) I've also already checked with the buns vet to see if she deals with rats, and she does! *bonus!*

I do have one major question though. The rat will likely be housed in the same room with the buns, though of course they will not have direct contact. Do you think the smell of rat in the room will bother them too much?

:Guess you'd know me from the rabbit forum as WykkanKytten ;) Rats are great pets. Your best bet for a well-socialized rat is to contact a good breeder, but, saving a rat from the shelter is just as good - you'll just have to deal with their past and socialize them a lot ;) Pretty much the same standards as looking for a healthy rabbit.. bright eyes, alert, not scared of people, healthy size, etc. Wire-bottom cages are a no-no since the rats, after being on the wire for a while, will get "bumblefoot" or inflamed feet. If you're still interested in adopting a rattie, reply back and I'll tell you some more with my experiences with rats (have two) and will give you some great info sites.
