Hi. I just wanted to add that neutering might not do anything to help with his agression depends on his age. If he's already passed the "teenage" months then he's probably just territorial and his agression isn't due to hormones. Also, do you know how the shelter went about introducing him to other rats? Some rats can be a bit tricky when introducing to new rats, and if you do it right and take time to do it (instead of just putting 2 rats together right away) it can work. I've had intros that lasted months, but at the end they were living together quite happily.
RFC (www.goosemoose.com/rfc) is a great place to get information, there are many very experienced rat owners there and they're very friendly (unless you're irresponsibly breeding, which is a very sensitive issue there). Good luck wiht your first rat! It's so great you're adopting from a shelter, I run a rescue so I'm always advocating rescue rats =)
