I'm actually about to buy a ferret cage for my two rats. All you have to worry about, like you mentioned, is the spacing between the wire. If you find a ferret/chinchilla cage you like and you think your rats will like but it has too large of a spacing between the wire, just get some wire mesh from a hardware store and cover the cage with it.
