Well.

Firstly, are you talking about feeding baby squirrels these chestnuts? Or captive squirrels? If so, this may not be a great idea.

Otherwise, if these are squirrels that roam around in your backyard or whatnot, if they want to eat them, they will take them off the tree. If they don't, they simply wont. It's there for the taking, just watch and see what they do. I know the squirrels around my place eat almost anything and everything.
