I wouldn't use the cedar shavings. My husband and I have 2 glider books and they say it's not good for them. We use this stuff in a green and white bag called "carefresh." There's really no way to stop the smell to be honest with you. It's because the males have the glands on their heads (the bald spot) and they mark everything. What we do is everyday we lightly clean the outside and the inside of the cage bars to help with the smell. We clean the cage faithfully every week. We have an ionic breeze thing in the room with them which dulls the smell. The males do smell worse then the felmales, but you'll get use to it. As long as you keep up on the cleaning and such it's not so bad. Hope I've helped a little bit.
