I am very confused about this thread. Are you stating that you should get a flying squirrel instead of a sugar glider, or to get a sugar glider instead of a Flying squirrel?
The problem with the statement you made is that they could be considered "mildly" simaliar in size and shape. They are both nocturnal and bond with their owners. Also they glide and use their tail as a rutter.
I have heard that flyers bond a lot harder than gliders, but this is hearsay to me, I am not owned by any of them. I am personally owned by 11 soon to be 13 gliders, 6 dwarf hamsters and a lop eared bunny, not to mention my human children that also have a claim on me.
Gliders are marsupials and carry their young in their pouch for about 70 days, their nipples are inside their pouch. Flyers on the other hand give birth to their young, fully developed, and their nipples are on the outside.
I think that everyone should research a specific pet and/or furry "kid" before making a commitment for the life of that creature. It sadens me to see people get in over their head because, it was so cute how could I say no, I didn't know that they could be illegal, food requirements why not just feed them ........ , etc. My wish for the future is that people will consider that just because they are cute doesn't mean they are the ideal pet for you. Please don't get in over your head. I feel that I am a pretty knowledgable person when it comes to gliders, but, I research and try to learn more about them everyday. I don't think that I could ever know everything. That is an unrealistic goal.
