:I don't know if he hitched a ride into the house on the tree (the tree has been inside for 2 weeks) or if it came inside some other way. :Can someone positively ID him from the photo? A sugar glider, right?
I would say it is a flying squirrel. Sugar Gliders arent native to North America, so unless it was someones escaped pet, I would say you had yourself a flying squirrel. We had one get in the house last fall via the fireplace chimney. At 1 or 2 am we were woke up by our dogs "playing" in our sons bedroom. I went to scold them so we could go back to sleep, and they were trying to get behind a toybox. I moved it to investigate, and a little flying squirrel zoomed around the room with the dogs in hot pursuit! I finally caught the little guy by putting on some leather gloves and grabbing him. I let him go outside. Through the whole ordeal, my son never did wake up, and was mad because I didnt show him the squirrel. Typical boy!

:I woke up to this guy in my Christmas tree at 2:00 am. He was making some scratching noises on a window sill near the tree. When I approached him he jumped into the tree where I was able to coax him to the top. I opened the slider door and as I tried to catch him, he "flew" right out the door. What a neat animal! I live in NJ and have seen one jump from the house and glide towards a tree when disturbed during gutter cleaning.
