Hi, I saw your web site. I thought you might find this story from here in Pittsburgh interesting. I heard on the 11 PM news that they are definitely going to take Benny away from the Wilfongs and probably put him in the Pittsburgh Zoo. I think it's terrible that they won't let them have him back. If you read this within a day or so of April 22, 2002 you will be able to see a video and pictures at www.thepittsburghchannel.com

Exotic Animal Found In Beaver County
'Visitor' Fits Binturong Description

UPDATED: 7:03 p.m. EDT April 22, 2002

ECONOMY, Pa. -- A Beaver County couple might not know exactly what showed up on their front doorstep over the weekend, but they know he sure was crabby.

Meet Benny

However, owner Brad Wilfong says once you get past the occasional flashing of fangs, his pet binturong Benny is a swell little guy.

The animal -- a bearcat that is native to southeast Asia -- was found Sunday morning on the porch of a home in Economy. It slept for a few hours until an animal control officer came to pick it up.

The officer used a 5-foot-long stick with a noose on the end to subdue Benny, who had apparently gone into attack mode when the man showed up.

The long-tailed animal is being temporarily housed at Triangle Pet in McKees Rocks. It will probably not be returned to Wilfong, and may instead be brought to the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium.

Keeping binturongs as pets is legal because they are not officially listed as endangered. WTAE's Bob Mayo reported that ownership would require a menagerie license from the state Game Commission.
